UAE: Etihad Rail confirms 11-city passenger network as services set for 2026
Stations to open in phases across all seven Emirates
ABU DHABI – Ahead of the launch of its first phase of passenger services in 2026, Etihad Rail has unveiled additional details of the UAE’s national passenger railway network.
The system will connect 11 cities and regions across the country, marking the UAE’s first fully integrated passenger rail service. Stations across the network will become operational in phases throughout 2026, reinforcing a nationwide shift towards rail-based mobility.
The announcement expands on details shared earlier, when Etihad Rail confirmed its initial passenger stations in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Fujairah. The newly revealed locations complete the national map, positioning rail as a core element of the UAE’s transport and infrastructure strategy.
Network rollout
The passenger railway will serve Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Fujairah, Al Sila’, Al Dhannah, Al Mirfa, Madinat Zayed, Mezaira’a, Al Faya and Al Dhaid. Etihad Rail said the stations have been strategically selected to strengthen connectivity between urban centres, emerging communities and key regions across the Emirates.
According to Etihad Rail, the network is designed to provide safe, reliable and efficient mobility for citizens, residents and visitors, while easing pressure on road transport and supporting long-term national development goals.
Leadership’s vision
Azza AlSuwaidi, Deputy CEO of Etihad Rail Mobility, said preparations for the 2026 passenger launch reflect the UAE leadership’s vision of building an integrated transport ecosystem. She described the passenger network as a cornerstone of the national transport framework, supporting economic growth, social cohesion and inter-emirate connectivity.
AlSuwaidi noted that the project builds on Etihad Rail’s operational experience since 2023, when national freight services began running across the country. She highlighted close collaboration with partners and stakeholders, alongside the deployment of advanced technologies and next-generation trains developed with leading international operators.
She added that the trains will carry a distinct Emirati identity, while serving as a long-term investment in sustainable mobility. The network is expected to support domestic tourism, strengthen community links and enhance overall quality of life.
Passenger experience
Etihad Rail said the trains have been designed to deliver a modern and comfortable travel experience. Features include ergonomic seating, contemporary interiors, full Wi-Fi coverage and individual power outlets at every seat. Services will operate on a precise and regular timetable, offering a congestion-free alternative to road travel between cities.
The operator said this approach will ensure smooth and efficient journeys, reducing travel times while maintaining high standards of safety and reliability.
Fleet readiness
Chief Projects Officer Eng. Mohammed Alshehii confirmed that passenger services will officially begin in 2026, with the first phase linking 11 carefully selected cities and areas. These include locations near Mohammed Bin Zayed City in Abu Dhabi, Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai, University City in Sharjah and the Al Hilal area in Fujairah.
Alshehii said 10 of the 13 passenger trains have already arrived and have undergone testing and certification to international safety and quality standards. Each train can carry up to 400 passengers and will be operated using advanced systems to ensure secure and reliable services. Stations will be integrated with other transport modes to support seamless onward journeys.
He added that the project represents the outcome of three years of intensive planning, design and delivery, involving more than 7,000 experts and workers and 24.5 million working hours.
National impact
Beyond transport, the passenger rail network is expected to deliver wider national benefits, including enhanced mobility, reduced emissions and stronger economic and social ties between the Emirates. By linking communities and regions more closely, Etihad Rail aims to make the UAE more accessible and connected as passenger services begin rolling out in 2026.
